How is the TOEFL structured?

  • Since 2005, the "internet-based" TOEFL (TOEFL ibT) has replaced the "paper-based" TOEFL and the "computer-based" TOEFL in many countries.
  • The TOEFL tests the four language skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
  • In the TOEFL ibT, these skills are tested using tasks on a PC with headphones and a microphone. Many exercises combine the different skills; for example, candidates have to read a text, then listen to a recording and then speak their answer to the question into the microphone.
  • The test lasts a total of 2 hours.
