General information

The course is based on level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and is the second component of this level. The course teaches the skills of listening comprehension, reading comprehension, oral interaction, oral production and writing. The focus is on both general language and study-related skills. The lessons are activity-orientated and communicative

Learning objectives

Listening
Students can understand a wide range of demanding, longer general language or science-related texts, even if they are not necessarily spoken in standard language and contain disruptions. They can easily follow complex interactions in group discussions or debates, even when abstract topics are being discussed.

Listening activities include:

- Lectures and talks

- radio programmes

- complex conversations and discussions

- Internet broadcasts

Reading
Students will be able to understand long, complex texts in detail, even if they do not belong to their own area of specialisation. They will be able to understand the content and relevance of news, articles and reports on a wide range of work-related topics as well as implicit attitudes and opinions. More complex text forms are dealt with in class, which are encountered in social and professional life or during studies, such as

- various articles from newspapers and magazines

- Specialist articles on topics such as business and science

Oral interaction and production
Oral interaction and production in various situations is practised in the course so that students can:

- keep up easily in a debate or discussion and convincingly argue a position, clearly recognise pro and con arguments and respond spontaneously to complex counter-arguments (e.g. during group work or in a seminar)

- successfully participate in and conduct negotiations, emphasising key points in an appropriate manner and providing supporting details

- present complex topics in a well-structured and clear manner and handle questions with ease (e.g. in technical presentations and lectures)

Writing
Students will be able to write clear, well-structured texts on complex topics in an academic context, taking into account the writing conventions of the English language and emphasising the key points. The focus of the course in the field of writing skills includes:

- Planning and structuring essays

- Summarising several sources

- Presenting one's own opinion

- Weighing up pros and cons using academic means

Proof of performance through

- Regular attendance (proof is provided by attendance lists)
- Written exam lasting approx. 240 minutes consisting of

• Reading comprehension
• listening comprehension
• writing task(s)

- oral examination
