NFLRPA - Roleplay Initiative Non-Formal Learning through Role-Playing Activities

Overview

The ERASMUS+ project 'NFLRPA - Roleplay Initiative Non-Formal Learning through Role-Playing Activities' focuses on non-formal learning for young people.

The project will run for 36 months, with English being the project language. In the NFLRPA project, the partners are developing and evaluating a youth development approach for role-playing. A network of schools is being established in which young people immerse themselves in role-playing games and network them. This is closely linked to general extracurricular youth work. There are regular weekly RPG activities in the afternoons in schools,

led by experienced role-players. The aim is to promote social, linguistic and job-related skills in a non-formal learning approach. The role-players are prepared and trained, and appropriate materials are created for this purpose. The aim is to create optimal non-formal learning environments that promote personal development. The University of Paderborn will scientifically evaluate the approach.

The activities will be conducted in the project language, English, so that participants are expected to have good language skills and develop them further. Role-playing has a positive effect on social skills, communication skills, teamwork, organizational skills, tactical skills, and also supports mathematical skills, leadership qualities, etc.

The main results will be a scientific study of the learning outcomes and the development of a network that will continue to grow even after the project ends. The results also include the training materials to be developed.

Objective

Objectives:

The young generations have embraced electronic games and the online world, and there are many opportunities to reach young people in new ways. However, when we get excited about digital approaches, it is extremely important not to forget that the digital world is only helpful for youth development to a certain extent.

A healthy balance is necessary and the learning approach via role-playing competes with video games for young people's attention. However, there are ways to capture young people's minds and immersion in a fantasy role-playing game is one of them. Role-playing games are essentially films that take place in the imagination of the players and in which the players play the main roles. The players play together as a team and a game master describes the scenes and represents the other roles. This type of game has been around since the 1970s, but in recent years the Dragon Legion network, a group of young people from across Europe, has brought together this focus. The NFLRPA project thus focuses on a game-based learning approach.

NFLRPA is designed to achieve the following goals:

  • Promoting social skills and teamwork among young people - social skills
  • Promoting communication skills among young people - communication skills
  • Promoting language skills - language skills
  • Promoting employability - employability skills
  • Awareness of how to deal with different role requirements - role taking skills
