Content

Careers in academia are both attractive and risky. This workshop allows you to deepen your understanding of the German academic labour market and to reflect upon the opportunities and challenges involved in national and international academic careers. It also provides you with an opportunity to plan the next steps of your own career.

The aspects covered include:

  • Which specificities of the German academic labour market should doctoral students and postdocs be aware of?
  • Why is aiming for a professorship so important in the German academic system? How do selection procedures for professorships work?
  • How do I deal with the risks involved in an academic career?
  • What are the different career paths in the postdoc phase? What are their respective advantages and drawbacks?
  • How international is the German labour market? How important is international experience and how do I put it to use?
  • What are the achievements to aim for? How do I develop my scientific profile?
  • What can I do to become aware of more career options?
  • What are my next steps?

The coaching sessions on day 2 complement the workshop and allow for a more detailed discussion of individual questions and challenges. Time slots for the coaching sessions will be arranged in the workshop.
